Unprecedented day on Brasil Ride Bahia

For the first time in the event's history a stage is canceled

October 2022 - Due to the heavy rains that fell on the region between Porto Seguro and Guaratinga, this Tuesday morning, the 24th, the management of Brasil Ride Bahia 2022 decided to postpone the second stage of the ultramarathon. The race route, between Arraial d'Ajuda and Guaratinga, was 128 km long.

According to the founder of Brasil Ride, Mario Roma, the decision was taken to ensure the safety of athletes and work teams. "With the rains, the route became unfeasible for today's race. In the region where the athletes would do the stage, it rained about 100 mm of rain during the night, which dragged on early in the morning. keep the participants safe and we have already monitored the forecast so that there are no surprises. As I always say: 'whoever goes to the sea, take precautions on land.'

UCI Commissioner Fred Seemann agreed with Mário Roma and gave the example of an adverse weather event he witnessed. "It was like an event I attended in Arkansas (USA). There, a small tornado hit the camp and destroyed part of the tents. With that, we also had to postpone a step, for safety reasons - Safety First: safety first place", he revealed.

Stage - According to Mario Roma, starting tomorrow, the ultramarathon continues. "In 12 years, the ultramarathon has never had a situation like this. It will be a different route, but we will continue with Brasil Ride, which always has pleasant surprises", he explained.

The race director, Rafael Campos, stressed that the decision to postpone the race was safety and asked the participants, care and prudence. Tomorrow's race will have 57,2 km and 711m of accumulated altimetry. " There will be 40% of the route in singletracks, sections in downhill and, despite not being so technical, the care must be redoubled on account of roots and foliage, large puddles and two points of highway stretch, where the Highway Police will be giving support. The starting order is in the app", he stressed.

Training Routine - To face yet another stage of the Brasil Ride, even on this day off, the athletes performed training sessions to keep their bodies and minds active. The world champion Tiago Ferreira (DMT Racing Team by Marconi) explained that they had nothing planned, so they decided to train indoors. "Early on we found out about the cancellation of the stage and the option was to do 2h of indoor training in two 1h sessions, in the morning and in the afternoon, so as not to stay still. I also took the opportunity to rest a little more and put my bags and things in order," he said.

Gustavo Xavier (Specialized Racing BR) and the Specialized BR team preferred to do a more relaxed training on the street. "We woke up very early, at 5:50 am. And we had to improvise. We did a two-and-a-half-hour training session, about 70 km, at a much lighter intensity than today's race. We did a physical therapy session, some exercises and we took the opportunity to rest as well. I believe that depending on the athlete's characteristics, the day off can interfere in the next stage of the race, which will be a shorter stage but with high intensity, and with mud, the stage will be more difficult", he commented.

Marcella Toldi (Johny Lin / Ciclovia Rio Pinheiros) said that the day off makes her anxious, but to overcome that feeling, the athlete decided to do a light workout with stimuli for the mind and rest. "I took the opportunity to review the bag, review supplementation, think about the next steps and find friends. I did the asphalt training, in the rain. the mud because of the bike and the wear of the brake pads and ratio", he added.
