December, 2021 - The city of Conceição do Mato Dentro, in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte (MG), has made its name in the history of world mountain biking, by hosting last week the unprecedented edition of Santander Brasil Ride Espinhaço. In addition to receiving cyclists from all over the country and the world, the event had the Cipó Marathon in its program. The dispute featured a circuit of 53,6 km and 1.720 m of accumulated altitude. More than 100 cyclists among those registered were from the host city, which shows how much the sport is encouraged locally.
"The Cipó Marathon ended with a golden key to Santander Brasil Ride Espinhaço. The cyclists had the pleasure of riding in the main race, or in the tour, with a shorter route, which encourages beginners to start our sport. Who experienced this day. The prize was also to get to know up close Brazilian and world cycling beasts, such as the Portuguese Tiago Ferreira, world and European champion", praised Mario Roma, founder of Santander Brasil Ride.
After cycling the 53,6 km in 2h59min17, cyclist Gustavo Puelker, from Instituto Brasil Ride, became champion of the first edition of the event held in a single stage. Gilvan Barbosa and Raoni Pinto completed the top 3 in 3h10min48 and 3h15min20. Among women, Márcia Matos was the fastest, in 4h14min28. She was ahead of Bárbara Oliveira and Natália Oliveira, who completed the course in 4:16:39 and 4:29:37, respectively.
"The Cipó Marathon was very important, for me to put all the lessons learned from 2021 into practice. It was a very tough race, with 53 km full of steep climbs and technical trails. I started calmly, intending to give my best, always seeking have fun during the race", reported the first place winner, Gustavo Puelker.
"More significant than the victory was seeing my performance and evolution. Furthermore, it showed me how much I can still evolve. The most exciting moment was the arrival, being welcomed by Mario Roma, because he knows how much I tried and I dedicated to get there," added the champion, who is part of the Instituto Brasil Ride team.
Next issue - The next edition of Santander Brasil Ride Espinhaço is already scheduled. The race will be held between April 19 and 23, being responsible for opening the competition calendar of the main cycling circuit in Brazil. As in the debut, Santander Marathon do Cipó will be responsible for closing the event with a golden key, bringing together a few hundred more cyclists on Saturday, the 23rd.
