Tiago Ferreira wins Brasil Ride 2023

Avancini wins the last stage and guarantees runner-up; Netherlands, Colombia and Brazil make the women's podium

October 2023 – The sun crowned the last day and seventh stage of Brasil Ride 2023. It was only overshadowed by the two-wheeled giants who crossed the finish line as the finisher of the ultramarathon. And there were many moments of emotion and inspiration at Brasil Ride Bahia. Goodbyes, new friends, dreams, among so many smiles and tears of joy.

The men's podium was contested until the last second. The Brazilian Henrique Avancini (Caloi Henrique Avancini Racing - 18h16m51s), despite winning the seventh stage with a time of 01h40m55s, was unable to catch Tiago Ferreira (DMT Racing Team By Marconi - 18h16m12s) leaving 38s behind the Portuguese in the general classification. Third place in the stage was Hans Becking (Buff Megamo Team – 01h41m30s) and in the general classification the title went to Simon Stiebjahn (Singer Racing Team – 18h28m38s).

“The stage was fast and super exhausting, because my strategy was to follow Henrique as closely as possible to manage the 40s I had ahead of me. And it worked. He attacked 3 times on the trail and I managed to respond. Winning the Brasil Ride is extremely gratifying, as in addition to loving this race, it is a milestone in my career. I'm ending a cycle with my current team. I managed to win in an event of this magnitude, it's special, I'm very happy with that. Today’s word is happiness”, he commented, explaining that Brasil Ride requires a lot of concentration. “It's a 7-day race where every moment counts, there isn't one that's more difficult, you have to be well every day and manage your time,” he declared.

Henrique Avancini was emotional upon arrival and was unable to speak in public. And who knows what the world can expect from this world champion and inspiration for so many Brazilians? In the Podcast, he expressed his excitement at experiencing Brasil Ride as his last event as a professional.

“I'm very happy with the race. It was a contest of great honor. The best memories I have as a competitor were the big battles, win or lose. This week was fantastic, I lost a little time on the first day and we competed every day, it seemed like there was nothing between us, we are athletes with different characteristics, at all times we pushed ourselves to the limit and got the most out of each other. In the almost 20 hours of competition and the difference of 40 seconds, at no point did the honor between us shake. I tried to win until the last moment and gave everything, whenever I could, I attacked, but Tiago got the better of it. We didn't use anything other than healthy and respectful competition. His title was deserved,” he highlighted.

Rest - Avancini also spoke about plans for tomorrow. In his 26-year professional career, he said he lived from sport to sport. “Now I want to rest a little. I never put myself first and for a while I want to respect myself and do things for myself without people's approval. And continue with plans for the future”, he pointed out. Outside of races, Avancini stated that he likes cycling, doing simple things and being with simple people. “I like living life, eating, looking at landscapes, laughing and being normal, which is very good. When we take the risk of being someone in life, we have to leave these small pleasures aside. I am very grateful for being able to put my personal life aside to do so many good things for myself and the people I love. I think I fulfilled this mission well and I will still see the good seeds that I planted in the sport flourish”, he concluded.

Women - Colombian Monica Calderón (Cannondale Vas Arabay) was the fastest of the day, with 01h58m52s and opened a lead of 06m06s over Tessa Kortekaas (Cannondale Vas Arabay - 02h04m59s). However, the podium went to her teammate, who had difficult moments throughout the ultramarathon, who completed Brasil Ride Bahia in 23h24m12s, with a 09m15s advantage over second place.

“The weather was hot and humid, but there was a little more shade on the singletrack. Humidity doesn't affect me as much as heat. I'm happy, despite second place, because I fought every day and won 4 stages out of 7 and what's left is learning. The word that defines Brasil Ride is intensity, from the beginning”, revealed Monica.

Tessa highlighted that the stage was tough, as since the beginning of the ultramarathon, she felt unwell, with a sore throat and today a bit of a fever. “I had to give everything I had to not lose qualifying time. Today I fell lightly and continued fighting. This is Brasil Ride. I’m happy, now it’s time to celebrate and rest,” she said, revealing that the word that defines this moment is intensity and beauty.

The stage classification gave Luiza Souza (02h13m06s) third place. In the general classification, number 3 on the podium was Eliane Resende (Gorgeous – 23h59m19s).

Eliane told a little about her story at Brasil Ride. “My story is beautiful. It was Brasil Ride that gave rise to the most important thing in my life, the greatest gift, which is my son Henrique. In 2018, I went through some emotional problems and spoke to Mário Roma that I wanted to run Brasil Ride. A week later, I got a text from the guy who became my ultramarathon and life partner,” she explained.

The competitor - and her now husband - better known as Xuxa, trained together and, before the race took place, they were already dating. “A year later, I got pregnant. Participating in Brasil Ride, after becoming a mother, is a mission, especially when it comes to leaving him, as I am still breastfeeding. I missed countless training sessions, as everything that happens with my son is a priority. Andrea Roma, a wonderful and superhuman woman, helped me not to give up, allowing him entry to spend a night with me in Guaratinga. Which was good so I didn't miss him. I just suffered on the trail. I'm very happy to be able to combine my two passions: cycling and motherhood. The phrase that defines this ultramarathon is 'finally, I finished Brasil Ride after motherhood'”, he highlighted.

First time - Luíza was emotional upon arrival at Arena Brasil Ride. Without a team and for the first time in an ultramarathon, the Brazilian spoke of the difficulties faced and the joy of overcoming obstacles. “I gave my 100%. Yesterday and today I had mechanical problems and the competition was very close. I did my best and I'm happy, regardless of the result. and today I did everything I could. As they say, Brasil Ride is truly a stage in our lives. There was all the preparation beforehand, the experience during it and it was incredible. The word is overcoming, as it is a struggle to get here, it is a struggle to train and another to complete”, she expressed.

Johnne Victor Nunes is from Caetité (BA) and participated for the first time in the biggest premium stage race in the MTB World and was so enchanted that he has already secured his registration for next year.
“I'm from the road and trained for less than a week to get to know the trails. I did well, but I crashed in the Queen Stage. I only had one fall and I can say that Brasil Ride is an incredible experience. It’s going to be the tattoo of my life from now on,” she reported. He defines Brasil Ride as self-knowledge and relationships. “I made a lot of friends and got to know myself better, Brasil Ride brought me that”, he revealed.

Participating in the Marathon of Discoveries for the fourth time, Fábio Santana da Cruz, 43 years old, did not hide his excitement at finishing the race once again. “The feeling I have is the same as the first time. The adrenaline rises and the nervousness is very strong. When you cross the finish line, happiness is immense. I had been without training for more than 3 years and managed to complete the race”, he said, while being greeted by the family who were waiting for him with celebration.

The family's joy was double, as Eduardo Modenezi, aged 13, was also at the race. “This is my second year participating and I really enjoyed it. The route was a little different. This week I wasn't able to train, but I made it to the end. It was really cool!”, he added.
