Austrians win fourth stage and increase gap at the top of the GC in Brasil Ride

Daniel Geismayr and Hermann Pernsteiner completed the stage this Wednesday (21st) almost eight minutes before the runner-ups, Dutch Hans Becking and Czech Jiri Novak

Rio de Contas, Bahia, Brasil
- Austrian stars in long distance MTB races in Europe, Daniel Geismayr and Hermann Pernsteiner returned to the top of the podium in the sixth edition of Brazil Ride. After winning the last two stages, Geismayr and Pernsteiner once again managed to face the heat of Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, not only to win another dispute, but also increase the gap. The Austrian duo completed the 84.7 kilometers of the fourth stage with a time of 4h05min48, 7min57 ahead of Hans Becking (NED) and Jiri Novak (CZE), runner-ups. Remi Laffot (FRA) and Steffem Thum (GER) completed the podium with the time of 4h17min55.

"It was incredibly hot today. I believe this was the hottest race day of my life (over 30 degrees). Riding the last climb was very hard for us. We felt too weak in this last section, and made a lot of mistakes. We tried to keep a steady pace to win. Anything can happen in a stage marathon, so we have to have good planning and try to increase the gap, if possible. Or just manage to keep ahead", said Hermann.

Placed fourth in the world rankings of the UCI MTB Marathon Series of the season, Daniel Geismayr has had good results in ultramarathons in recent years, as being the runner-up of the Swiss Epic 2015 and Bike Trans Alp 2014, three times runner-up in the Austrian Championship MTB Marathon, and also three times Cyclocross National champion. Current Marathon runner-up in the Austrian MTB Marathon, Hermann’s best result is the European Marathon in 2012.

Daniel and Hermann now have 13h04min39 accumulated minutes, approximately 28 minutes ahead of the 2014 champions, Hans and Jiri, who add 13h32min10. Hugo Prado Neto and Lukas Kauffmann, who placed fourth on this stage, now occupy the third place in the GC, with 13h33min51.

Ladies’ record - Major candidates for the ladies’ title in Brazil Ride after half the competition on Wednesday (21st), Raiza Goulão and Viviane Favery wrote their names in the history of the main mountain biking ultramarathon of the Americas. By completing the 84.7 kilometers of the fourth stage with a time of 5h27min29 and keeping their place on the top of the podium, the duo broke the record held by Americans Sonya Looney and Nina Baum in 2014. They reduced the time of the stage in 12min40.

"I’m speechless. I feel amazing. Every effort is being compensated to me and Raiza. The old record owners are references for me in the sport and having achieved this result with my companion shows that I'm on the right track", celebrated Viviane Favery. Italians Annabella Stropparo and Elenda Gaddoni completed as runner-ups, followed by Isabella Lacerda and Nina Baum.
